Ice-pick lesbians to return; a 'date movie' for gay men

by Jerry Semas

Ice-pick alert: Director Paul Verhoeven is sticking with an all-too-familiar theme with his next film Showgirls. Shot in Las Vegas, the picture is described as 'an erotic and gritty expose of life behind the scenes of the Las Vegas strip.' But, much like his last film Basic Instinct with its ice-pick killer, this project also features an evil, cocaineaddicted lesbian with the hots for the film's main character. The similarity is not surprising considering the script is by Joe Eszterhas, who last worked with Verhoeven on Basic Instinct.

Film director Eric Mueller's World and Time Enough is a gay love story set in Minneapolis, which San Francisco Weekly called a "revolutionary concept in gay cinema." It will be showing April 6, 7, and 8 at the Cleveland Film Festival (see page 19). Variety called it "the year's preemenient date movie for gay men." The story focuses on two good-looking gay men and issues of HIV status and social alienation. Mark is a conceptual artist on the outs with his dad, and relies on short-term projects to keep him from taking despised temp jobs for a living. Joey is a roadside garbage collector both in vocation and hobby while searching for his biological parents. The two live together in

a warehouse apartment as their lives are defined via flash-backs, fantasy scenes and moments of satire.

Go Fish producer Christine Vachon is helping to develop the screen adaptation of transgender activist Leslie Feinberg's book Stone Butch Blues. The news got out at a recent fundraiser for Frameline, the producer of the upcoming 19th annual San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

Boys Life has hit a few art houses around the country and may be out on video by the summer. The film is a compilation of three half-hour shorts, all looking at the coming out of gay teenagers. In the first segment, Pool Days, a 17-year-old is clueless to his sexual leanings until he takes a summer job as a lifeguard at a health spa. The next piece, A Friend of Dorothy's focuses on a young gay freshman at New York University who forms a crush on his hunky roomate. (Dorothy, without the other two shorts, has also been included in the Cleveland festival.) The final short is called The Disco Years, and takes place on the West Coast during the 1970s. A young man named Tom has a

sexual tryst with his tennis buddy Matt, only to have Matt turn on him while urging Tom to "Grow up and get a girlfriend!" The films are serious works with high production values, and do not begin with an FBI warning label.

Oscar winner Terrence Stamp (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) stars in Bliss for producer Allyn Stewart and director Lance Young, currently filming in Los Angeles.

Great Moments in Aviation is the next project from Beeban Kidron (To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar). Rookie actress Rakie Ayola stars as a young West Indian woman who sails to Britain in the 1950s in hope of making a new life as an airplane pilot. Plans change when a pair of lesbian missionaries, portrayed by Vanessa Redgrave and Dorothy Tutin, intervene with their own agenda.

Leonardo di Caprio will co-star with David Thewlis (Prime Suspect 3) as 19thcentury poets and lovers Rimbaud and Verlaine in an upcoming untitled film project.

Chablis, the real-life drag queen who was portrayed in John Berendt's book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has received a $100,000 advance for her memoirs.

Actor Craig Chester (Swoon) is writing a screenplay on life of gay actor Montgomery Clift. The story will explore how various types of manipulation drove Clift into drug abuse and self-destruction.

Getting Away With Murder is the title of Lily Tomlin's next film. Described as eccentric, quirky and wonderful, the film will also feature Dan Aykroyd as a professor who suspects that his quiet and gentle neighbor, Jack Lemmon, is a war criminal. Tomlin plays Lemmon's daughter who eventually marries Aykroyd's character. Brian Kerwin, best known for kissing Matthew Broderick in Torch Song Trilogy, co-stars with Harvey Miller (Private Benjamin) directing.

Moving from films like My Own Private Idaho and Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, director Gus Van Sant is heading more into mainstream films with the opening of To Die For. Nicole Kidman (Mrs. Tom Cruise) plays a small-town newlywed working as a weathercaster at a tiny UHF station who aspires to host her own big-time talk show. After being accused of her husband's murder, she thrives in her newfound celebrity.

You may think a lot of current television programing sucks, but wait until this next Aaron Spelling project gets off the ground. The Melrose and 90210 producer is developing a series, called Kindred, about a group of vampires. I can just hear the dialogue now: "Oh my Geeeyod, like, he's got a cross!" or "Don't close the lid all the way, you'll mess up my hair!"
